‘GREY AREAS’
Mobile, Alabama…
An explosion rocked the group of armed men dressed in second hand combat fatigues huddled behind the upturned table. As they began to get up, a second explosion sent them slamming backwards into the concrete wall, knocking them out.
“I thought you militia types were tough?” A mocking voice stated as two men armed with assault rifles smashed through a door, only for the concealed claymore mine planted on the other side to detonate, shredding one of the men’s legs and sending them both collapsing into a heap. “Turns out you’re just little boys with big toys.” The voice added as a woman dressed in a black nineteenth century esque jacket and britches slid off the desk she’d been sitting on, a grenade in each hand.
“They may be children, but I’m not!” A stern voice stated as a middle-aged man dressed in black cowboy leathers complete with a sexton on his head walked into the room. “The Taskmaster trained you and the other Death Throws, Bombshell, now I, Ramon Dantes come for you.”
“Firstly, it’s not Bombshell anymore, some brat and her helicopter mum took that title from me.” The woman sneered as she threw the grenade at the man, only for a bola to meet it halfway, the projectiles detonating as they collided. “I go by the name Grenadier now!” She yelled as she removed three more grenades and juggled them before flinging all three towards the man, her aged opponent dodging each explosion.
“And the second thing?” The cowboy asked, as he un-looped a rope-dart from his belt and swung it, the bladed end embedding through Grenadier’s hand as she reached for another grenade.
“I’m…a super villain…and you’re a henchman, face it Ramone I outclass you.” Grenadier sneered, tears rolling down her cheeks as she gritted her teeth and pulled out the dart. As she did, she saw a fist strike her in the throat, forcing the wind out of her as her opponent performed a swift leg sweep knocking her to the floor.
“I don’t care Grenadier; all I need to do is show your teacher that I am his equal!” Ramone growled as he held the rope-dart at Grenadier’s throat. “Now tell me where the other Death Throws are and maybe I’ll spare you.”
“Those losers, I cut ties with them after Crossfire faked his death.” Grenadier snorted as she reached for a pin on her jacket.
“Crossfire is dead, killed by his own men.” Ramone replied as barely contained anger spread across his face. “If you are willing to lie about that, why should I believe you’ve cut ties with the others?” He asked as Grenadier flicked the pin at Ramone, the disc biting into his skin, a red cross blinking as the older fighter fell back holding his head in pain.
“I don’t need to give a reason to a dead man!” Grenadier hissed as she removed a pistol from her thigh holster, the barrel of the weapon glowing red. “This is a molecular agitator, any target hit has their cells vibrate on a frequency until that they explode. Pretty fun right?” She asked as Ramone reached for the disc, removed it and then threw it at Grenadier, the disc blocking the barrel and causing the weapon to explode, knocking its holder back down to the floor.
“This is not fun; this is about my honour.” Ramone replied, as he struggled to his feet. “I will get nothing out of you, there is nothing left but the kill.” He sighed softly, his words drowned out by an ear-splitting hypersonic shriek, knocking him to the floor next to Grenadier. Looking to the destroyed door, both villains saw a woman with platinum blonde hair dressed in a green bustier and shorts standing over them, hands in fingerless gloves on her hips.
“Come on mad bomber, we gotta leave.” The woman in green stated as she helped Grenadier to her feet and dragged her towards the door. “I’d stay down if I were you cowboy.” She added as Ramone struggled to get to his feet before his body went rigid and collapsed back down to the floor. Bursting out of the doors into the car park of the convention centre, both women saw a barricade of SWAT vans and armoured police officers blocking their escape.
“Who are you?” Grenadier asked, as both women ducked back inside the convention centre.
“The girl who can hit the high notes.” The woman in green replied as she let loose a scream that sent one of the SWAT vans rolling backwards, forcing the police officers to scatter. “Call me Screaming Mimi, the new one not that old sell-out Gold.”
“Not complaining.” Grenadier replied as she unbuttoned her coat to reveal two pistols with rocket style warheads slotted in the barrels. “Gift-horse, mouth I get it.” She added as she leapt through the doorway, rolled and fired both pistols, the warheads streaking towards the vans and detonating. “If you get me out of here, I have some friends who will be very grateful.” She added, as Screaming Mimi walked out, dragonfly like wings sprouting out of her back.
“One direct flight to wherever you want, courtesy of Mimi Airways.” Screaming Mimi replied as she grabbed Grenadier and took to the skies. As they cleared the car-park, Grenadier fished out a thumb sized trigger and pressed the button on top, the pink convertible Cadillac that was her initial getaway vehicle exploding in a massive fireball that engulfed the police officers closest to it.
“You are so cool Elanor!” Grenadier gasped as she and Screaming Mimi walked down the drive to the beautiful Spanish mission style ranch house. “I can’t believe that you did that.”
“He wasn’t so tough; the only problem is that he burned off all my clothes.” Screaming Mimi replied as Grenadier knocked on the door. “And then that I had to trudge miles through the Everglades butt naked.” She added causing Grenadier to swoon. “But you must have stories Wendy, I mean you rode with the king jerk himself.”
“Not like that, hell I lost my codename to a woman in her 40s and a kid.” Grenadier replied as the door opened and a brown-haired woman dressed in jeans and a halter-top decorated with a lightning bolt poked her head out.
“Hi Gale, so I picked up a friend.” Wendy stated shyly as the woman behind the door levelled an arm mounted saw blade launcher at Elanor. “She’s cool I swear, she saved me.”
“And you brought her here, what if she’s a SHIELD spy?” Gale asked as she fully opened the door. “Who are you, cut to the chase NOW!”
“To my friends I’m Elanor Silvers, but to stuck up rich girls like you I’m Screaming Mimi.” Elanor replied coolly as she got ready to take a deep breath. Sensing the tension, Wendy placed herself between the two women, pushing them apart.
“Gale, she’s cool trust me.” Wendy stated as she turned to look at the woman in the house. “And Elanor lay up on Gale, she’s cool too. I mean we’re all super villainesses here, we’re all on the same side, right?”
“No.” Gale answered coldly.
“Agreed.” Elanor added. “But I’m willing to play nice for the time being.”
“Awesome, come inside, you’ve got to say high to the rest of us.” Wendy chirped as she pulled Elanor inside, pushing Gale out the way and into the beautifully decorated home.
“You’ve got to give Gale space, both in and out of costume,” Wendy continued as she brought Elanor into a room, where a green haired woman dressed in snake skin trousers and blouse was flicking a bull whip out towards candles scattered about the room, “trust me she still hasn’t got used to spinning around as Whirlwind.”
“Is that Madame Viper?” Elanor asked as the woman with the whip coiled the cord up. “Are you guys with Hydra?”
“I was,” The green haired woman announced as she stretched out her hand in friendship, “Corrina Jiménez AKA Pit Viper.” She added as Elanor shook her hand. “I was one of Viper’s body doubles until Dr Grey helped free me from Hydra’s brain washing.”
“Dr Grey?”
“Our boss, Dr Katherine Grey, she lets us live here and protects us.” Wendy explained as a woman with a blue mohawk dressed in leather trousers and top, blades jutting from her arms walked in followed by an older woman dressed in a grey suit, her blonde hair streaked with black locks.
“Wendy, who is this?” The older woman asked cautiously, despite the smile on her face.
“Dr Grey this is Elanor Silvers, she saved me back at the Convention Centre.” Wendy answered as Elanor studied Grey. The welcoming smile on her face was almost like a mask concealing something wicked and conniving inside. “She’s the new Screaming Mimi.” Wendy added.
“Is she, well thank you for helping Wendy get back here.” Dr Grey replied as Elanor watched the blue haired woman step to one side. Behind Elanor, Gale entered the room, her arms folded as if she was unimpressed by what was happening.
“What are you a doctor of?” Elanor asked as she scanned Dr Grey up and down.
“I’m a doctor of temporal dynamics.” Dr Grey answered, as she looked at Elanor’s throat. “Miss Silvers, where did you get your powers from?” Dr Grey replied as Elanor clenched her fists tight, ready for a fight.
“You know.” Elanor replied as she took a step back. “Just like I know who you are.” She added before uttering a shrill whistle.
“What’s going on Dr Grey?” Wendy asked as she and the other super villainesses looked at Elanor.
“You may think you know who I am Melissa.” Dr Grey replied as she dropped the façade of friendliness. “But I can assure you that you don’t.” She added with a menacing tone to her voice, just as a bola flew through the air and wrapped around Gale sending her to the floor.
“You!” Wendy snapped as Ramone walked into the room, just as a pink sonic wall shot out forcing Pit Viper and the woman with blades back. Turning to look at Elanor, a distraught look on her face, Wendy held back a sob. “You betrayed me Elanor, how, why?!”
“Because the good doctor has something I need!” Elanor snapped as the woman with blades stabbed them into the sonic wall, the acoustic barrier chipping with each strike.
“Sheath don’t bother.” Dr Grey ordered as she placed her hand on the wall, the sonic construct collapsing in seconds. “Kill the man, but bring me Songbird alive, I have so much to catch up on.” She added as she retreated back into her office.
With a scream Sheath lunged at Elanor, only for her metal blades to be met with a pair of sonic knives, sparks radiating off the weapons as the two women clashed. Behind them Pit Viper cracked her whip, before slashing out towards Ramone knocking the bola he was getting ready to throw out of his hands.
“Well Melissa, this is a fine snake’s nest you’ve thrown us into.” Ramone announced as Pit Viper’s whip lashed out again and cut open his cheek, the barbed tip of the cord slithering back towards the super villainess.
“You didn’t have to agree to helping me find Abe.” Melissa replied as she blocked another of Sheath’s attacks before summoning up a pair of sonic leglocks around her opponent’s ankles. “Dr Grey isn’t who she says she is, and I believe that she had something to do with his disappearance.” She added, as she yanked the chain between the leglocks, dragging Sheath to the floor, the barbed blades on her costume digging into the wood of the floor, locking her prone and face down.
“YOU TRAITORS!” Gale yelled as her body convulsed and spun, ripping the chain of the bola she was restrained by into pieces. “The three of you are right in the eye of the storm, and I’m the biting wind!” She yelled as she fired a shower of saw blades across the room, the majority heading towards the distraught Wendy.
Acting quickly Melissa formed a sonic sheath around the villainess, keeping her safe from the onslaught of blades.
“But they betrayed me.” Wendy muttered as she sat there crying. Across the room, Pit Viper lashed out again, striking Ramone in the chest. As she withdrew the whip, Pit Viper saw Ramone throw his rope dart out stabbing into the tip of the cord pinning it in place. Cursing in Spanish, Pit Viper swarmed forward towards Ramone, just as Gale fired another shower of saw blades, the majority catching Ramone in the back knocking him to the floor.
The last blade however, flew through the air and slashed through Pit Viper’s neck, her decapitated head and body collapsing to the floor.
“LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!” Gale roared as she spun forward delivering a salvo of blows on Melissa, each punch leaving a burning welt on her targets body. “Dr Grey wants you alive, but she didn’t say you have to have all your limbs.” She hissed as she spun up her sawblades and began to lower them towards Melissa’s arms.
“They betrayed me.” Wendy repeated as Ramone got to his feet and wrapped one of his bola around Gale’s neck pulling back, only for the woman to start spinning throwing him off into Melissa, sending the pair skidding to the floor in a pile.
“I’ll cut you down later!” Gale snorted as she towered over the two prone mercenaries. Before she could fire her saw blades at them, Wendy lunged at Gale knocking her to the floor with a surprising amount of force.
“I told Elanor that you were cool!” Wendy yelled as she went to punch Gale only to miss and hit the floor, before being kicked off of Gale.
“Too bad for you.” Gale replied as Wendy removed a detonator and thumbed the button, the charges she’d placed on the floor with her punch exploding and sending Gale tumbling through the floor into the basement with enough force to knock her out.
“To bad.” Wendy replied as she got up and removed a grenade from her belt. “I liked you and you betrayed me.” She sobbed as she went to remove the pin, only for a sonic fist to grasp the explosive before delivering a knock out punch to her face.
“I’m sorry Wendy, I liked you too.” Melissa replied as she and Ramone got to their feet. “Thanks for tailing us, I don’t know if I could have taken them all by myself.” She added as the two of them walked into the office that Dr Grey had taken refuge in. “And of course, she’s gone, she’d never risk her own butt fighting us.”
“I’m sorry Melissa.” Ramone sighed as he looked around the room before grabbing a set of files that had been left on the desk. “Perhaps there’s a trail here, if she knew anything about Abe’s disappearance.”
“I guess.” Melissa sighed as Ramone turned back towards the main room and the unconscious super villainesses. Looking around the room one last time Melissa let out a scream that radiated out through the room destroying everything that remained in the office. “I’ll find you eventually.” Melissa said as if speaking to an unseen force still lingering inside. “And when I do, you won’t like what happens to you.”
